Chessed for Lawrence - Hollywood Fl

Donation protected
As a community we are seeking help for Mr. Lawrence Simmons on his personal behalf for emergency humanitarian assistance.

Mr. Simmons born in 1941 in Manchester England immigrated to the United States over 35 years ago and has lived mostly in Hollywood area for that period of time. Mr. Simmons was a successful business owner of a glass shower installation company. He was never married or had any kids. His only living family is a brother in England that is not well himself and a widowed sister that is barely able to support herself.

Approximately 6 years ago Mr. Simmons could not work anymore due to his inability to lift heavy objects and gradual deterioration of various health condition. Any monies he had saved over the years were consumed during the years he was not working.

During the last three years his condition has deteriorated some more. He fell several times, was admitted almost weekly to the hospital and now has permanent Foley catheter connected to him. He has a number of medical issues such as Parkinson's disease, shortness of breath due to blood clots in his lungs, an enlarged prostate which prohibits him from urinating without a catheter.

His ability to walk is minimal and limited to several feet holding both hands on to a walker. Approximately 50 days ago Mr. Simmons was admitted to the hospital and recovered and is now ready to be released . He currently has no place to go. The house he was living in, A trailer home is no longer available to him due to nonpayment of rent, and landlord refuses to let him back to the place unless he has a caretaker.

Mr. Simmons was found nearly dead 50 days ago in his trailer apartment after losing consciousness due to a blood infection that spread to most of the body. The fire department had to break the door to get in and take him to the hospital. the paramedics said a few more hours and he would've gone into a come due to septic shock. For this reason the landlord does not want to take responsibility and let him back to the apartment unless a caretaker is assigned to him.

Mr. Simmons is currently an illegal alien and cannot receive any benefits available to residents. The hospital wanta to release him but he has no address to go to. We spoke to the landlord again and he was willing to let him back into the unit if he pays the two months rent and also make sure to have a caretaker for him so that we don't have another emergency situation.

I have personally known Lawrence for over 23 years. I've known him when he was a successful business owner. I have known him to be a very charitable person when he was working. It hurts me to see his deterioration and our inability to assist him in his older age. He's a person that has been part of our community and synagogue for the past 23 years.

The hospital case worker has contacted me today wanting to discharge him, yet there is no address he can go to. HE IS HOMELESS.
We are very fortunate the hospital is still holding him even though he has no insurance. However time is running out.

Nursing homes are too expensive, assistant living facility not affordable and would not admit him because of his Foley (catheter).

As we went through all his options with the hospital case worker the onlly option available for him is to return to his previous unit with a caretaker that would visit him for 4 hours a day. He really wants to go back to living in his own home, however we explained to him that unless we can find a caretaker and the money it would be impossible .

Monthly total : $1,811
