Sweden has an incredible dance camp that is 5 weeks long. It's called Herrang Dance Camp and every summer they hold this camp to teach dancers from all over the world Lindy Hop as well as other styles of dance which include Boogie Boogie, Balboa, Shag, and other styles of swing dancing:
This year I've been invited to come back to Herrang Dance Camp (HDC) and join their Chorus Line for 2 weeks. Last year I had the honor of being one of the recipients for the Frankie Manning Foundation Ambassador Scholarship to Herrang. I spent 3 weeks at HDC and came back with a deeper passion for Lindy Hop and my African American Culture.
As an active performing artist in New York, HDC helped motivate me to become a Freelance dancer and instructor. Three months after Herrang, I started my own workshop series and began teaching Lindy Hop workshops with a twist. My first workshop was a Lindy Hip Hop & RnB workshop where I taught Lindy Hop and Hip Hop steps to Old School Hip Hop. Since then I've also done partner workshops with my partner and fellow FMF Ambassador, Brandon Barker.
My goal as a dancer is to spread the history and the dance to young black children in New York. I've worked for Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation as a Music & Theater Arts instructor as well as teach swing dancing to the youth and NYPD in Brownsville for Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz for Young People Program. Programs for young black children are few and are far between but Lindy Hop is more about their culture than it is anyone else.
As an African American dancer in New York City, my ultimate goal is to keep the tradition of swing alive but also give young black children an outlet to express their struggle and what better way than to swingout!
As any artist, money can be a road block to our ultimate goals so this is where you come in. Plane tickets are expensive and that's what is pretty much stopping me going at the moment. Please dig deep! Anything helps!
