In early 2017, Rhonda was experiencing what she thought was minor medical issue. Upon going to the doctor, it was determined that she was suffering from severe vascular disease, affecting her lower extremities primarily. She was admitted for surgery and the doctors did what they could to repair the blockages. The surgery was not successful and she went back in for a more extensive surgery to repair the bypass to help relieve the pain and loss of circulation in her legs. After this surgery in August of 2017, Rhonda was in and out of the hospital and rehabilitation centers to help her heal. During the time between August and December, Rhonda went through a series of surgeries. She went home prior to Christmas and was admitted again with major complications. The doctors operated again and found massive infections around her bypass areas. It appeared that the coronary bypass surgeries she had were being rejected by her body and she needed to get relief immediately.
Doctors suggested to her husband, Glenn, that she be transported to Tampa General Hospital to receive treatment for the infectious disease and to determine how to correct the problem. Rhonda had 5 surgeries in 36 hours according to her husband and was sedated in an induced “coma” to help her heal. Today, Rhonda has a very long road to recovery and will be hospitalized 3 hours away from her family and friends until doctors feel confident she can be released. Since March of 2017, Rhonda has been in the hospital/rehab center for more than 6 months. This is putting a severe financial strain on her family to cover the significant medical expenses expected from having 10 surgeries in 7 months and the loss of income from her employer, the City of Cocoa.
As of today, we do not know if the most recent surgery will repair or correct the damage in her system. If needed, additional surgeries will be required to help Rhonda heal. Doctors are currently monitoring her status to avoid the most concerning complication in which they may have to amputate part of her foot/leg. As long as the infection is controlled, and blood continues to flow throughout her lower extremities, Rhonda will not require additional surgeries or amputation.
Rhonda worked for the City of Cocoa for over ten years as the Administrative Secretary for the Public Works Department. Her medical insurance will cover some of the expenses, but the medical costs are expected to be very extensive. Rhonda and Glenn need help paying these medical bills as well as the day-to-day expenses. Glenn is traveling between Rockledge and Tampa now and the travel costs are mounting.
Rhonda’s road to recovery will be a long and tedious process and additional expenses will be incurred as she recovers. The family needs your prayers as well as any financial donation you can give.
