An open letter to all shooters,

Every year approximately 177,000 young people from Universities, the Cadet Forces, the Scout Association and some Schools, take part in target shooting, yet only a tiny proportion of these ever continue to shoot independently.

Whilst the cost of shooting can be an issue, it is easily comparable to other sports such as rock-climbing, skiing and competitive cycling, all of which have significantly higher levels of participation among young people. Unfortunately, the logistics of shooting, combined with the massive up-front cost for the basic kit required, serve as a significantly greater barrier to entry into the sport than are faced by participants in these comparable sports.

The British Young Shooters’ Association (BYSA) was founded in January 2016 to tackle these issues. The aim of the Association is to increase participation in the sport of shooting among young people, irrespective of discipline or ability, through increasing access to the sport and providing practical support to young shooters.

Since our founding the Association has grown to a membership of over 250, 90% of whom are under the age of 25; and support 10 Universities across the UK. The Association supports multiple disciplines including: Smallbore, Target Rifle, Historic Service Rifle, Civilian Service Rifle and Gallery Rifle & Pistol, and we have ambitions to grow to support more in line with the overall aims of the Association. In time we hope to be able to support all shooting disciplines.

While we have managed to be largely self-supporting so far, we are now receiving considerably increased interest from young shooters, and from Universities, and the Association is growing faster than we had ever anticipated. While this is excellent news for the sport, the Association is now growing at greater rate than we can sustain without your help. To enable us to keep up the momentum we must therefore ask the shooting community for their support.

Through this fundraiser we are aiming to raise £5000 which will be invested in a major increase in club kit and equipment. This will help us to support a further 100+ young shooters per year, and in turn will support the establishment of at least 4 new University Rifle Clubs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kindest regards
