The last few weeks have been emotional to say the least.
Meredith Salazar is a beautiful 9-year old 4th grader. People who know her will tell you that she is one of the most fun-loving, polite, caring, smart, creative, and tough kids that they know. Meredith was suffering from intense headaches, extreme joint pain, vision issues, dizziness, fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite (to mention but a few) and upon numerous visits to the doctor, she steadfastly became more ill. Her parents decided to take her to the emergency room during the winter break, which ultimately resulted in Meredith being admitted to the ICU.
After numerous excruciatingly painful and grueling tests, Meredith was diagnosed with Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs). There is no cure for lupus, though effective treatments are available. At this point her current treatment will be a combination of chemo and steroid therapies, as well as immunotherapy, which will be supported by lupus fighting dietary changes.
“A new treatment for lupus, given through IV infusion, Benlysta costs about $35,000 per year, according to the National Institutes of Health. According to a fact sheet from the Lupus Foundation of America, the yearly cost of treatment for lupus averages more than $12,600 per patient.”
Meredith will fight; she is the true definition of a fighter. Meredith’s family is equally as strong. They are some of the best people you will ever meet. Meredith is blessed with an amazing support system that will help her get through this life changing disease. They are going to dive into this fight head-first, and they will beat it together.
The Salazar’s are very humble, hardworking, loving parents who will go to the ends of the earth to help their children. We are hoping that as a community, we can help them along the way. We all know how financially challenging life can be at times, but when you add something like this to your plate, funds don’t go as far. We are asking for you to look into your hearts and see if you are able to help support these amazing people, the Salazar’s.
This GoFundMe page has been created for those who would like to financially contribute to Meredith’s fight. There will be co-pays, co-insurance, hospitalization, and treatments etc. for a very long time.
