I’ve always wanted to be a pediatrician. I’ve just completed my undergrad degree and will be starting medical school August 2018 at St. George’s University. Firstly, I give a special thank you to those who have supported me through undergrad. Your support has been invaluable and is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you all I graduate with honors. I now embark on the next and final phase of my journey; that is, to become a physician.
Ever since I was a kid I’ve derived pleasure from helping those in need. In high school, I was a Peer Educator for Red Cross Youth Society who’s task it was to visit various high schools and discuss HIV/AIDS and how to protect and equip one’s self from harm with my peers. I have volunteered my time as a Teacher’s Aid and as a Phlebotomy Technician prior to starting undergrad, I also volunteered in a few Health Centers across the Kingston Area.
I remember very clearly the moment I decided that this was my path. I was 10
Years old and in grade six (6th grade). I was head-boy at the time and I remember a little girl (she was probably in grade 2 or 3) had fallen and suffered a laceration to her forehead. I took her school-tie rinsed it under the tap and cleaned her wound while telling her the best jokes a 10 year old could have in his arsenal. I left having the greatest sense of accomplishment I’d felt to that day and that is how I feel when I have been a source of help and comfort to someone in need, a trait I seem to have inherited from my mother.
My goal is to give more than adequate service to those who are ill and to give my time in service to the many under-served areas of the world. Someday I hope to work with Doctor With Borders reaching as many children as I can in my endeavor. My hope is that someone is willing to help me achieve my dream as I seek to give aid and comfort to the sick and suffering.
