This is my cousin James, his wife Ghizlane, and their 3 daughters. They are currently still surviving Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath in the upstairs of their flooded home. Another family is up there with them.
I am coordinating this GoFundMe effort from the PNW, where most of our family resides. Our family is very concerned for the safety and well-being of our cousin, brother, son, grandson and his precious family. Since we are far away, this is a tool for us to garner and send support to the 5 of them.
James was at work and his family was at home when people were warned to stay put in the storm. Regardless, he spent the next 10 hours searching for a way home, ultimately boating and trudging through water to reach his family.
All the while Ghizlane worked to keep her kids safe as their home was flooded and they were forced upstairs. What that must have been like, to scramble for immediate safety and quick planning, also wondering how and when your spouse will make it home.
Raising suppport isn't really about the "stuff" that was lost in James & Ghizlane's house, its monetary value or whether it was covered by insurance. It is about having to rebuild your Home, to regain your stability, and how challenging this is when so much work and home is lost.
Resettling after having the ground disappear from beneath you, whether physically, emotionally or spiritually, is part of Life. This challenge is made manageable by being able to take our turn receiving the service of others.
We all take our turn.
It is when we find ourselves not spinning, that we can reach out and steady someone who is. In James and Ghizlane's case, the unsteady ground is very real, the event that is throwing their world out of its previous orbit is still happening, and they are going to wake up in a new Houston, to a new meaning to the word "Home," lives, families, communities changed.
