Lost their daddy..and almost lost mommy

Hello "“ I am Dee Cohen. My 31-year-old son passed away and left behind a girlfriend, Kari, with 2 small children "“ Kevin, age 5 and Kaia, age 2. He did not have any life insurance nor did he get any benefits from Social Security. Kari was left with the full financial responsibility of raising these children while also being a drug addict.

We knew Kari was struggling with the death of her life partner but we didn't realize to what extent until we were living day to day with her. She struggled for the first couple of months and then began going to narcotics anonymous meetings. This helped her to get clean for 90 days. Then she relapsed last April, on my son's birthday and was not able to stay clean.

Kari has been undergoing in-house counseling and rehabilitation for the past 5 months and is doing really well; she will "graduate" in about 3 weeks! This means she will leave the treatment center and will need a place to live. This will be a transition period until she is able to provide for her children. We are hoping to raise enough to help her support these children for the next year while she attends Intensive Outpatient Treatment. Getting a job and even an apartment will be a challenge with no credit and a felony on her record. :-(
