Juvenile Hall Project Established 2016

As one of the largest Pet Assisted Therapy Dog organization in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, serving over 1000 people every day, we are aware of the changing demographics in our service area,  and we are committed to growing and adapting our program to meet emerging needs of troubled young people. The Los Angeles County Juvenile Correctional Project allows us to provide pet assisted therapy visitations and classes to the the following centers, Eastlake Juvenile Hall, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, Camp Rockey and act as an effective resource to these agencies.

Primary City or Neighborhood Served: Los Angeles County, Orange County

How we define success of the program and project?

Volunteers monitor cases on a weekly basis to track the progress of the youth in completing the tasks through the juvenile hall projects. If the youth have problems with their training or interaction with the dogs, the volunteers work to assist them in successfully completing the requirements to be part of this project.

The founding principle behind this program is self-understanding. We believe through giving youth an outlet to better express and understand themselves this awareness will transfer to other aspects of their life such as school and peer interactions. We promote teamwork by having the juveniles work in a collaborative environment where they are encouraged to work together and share ideas on the various projects working with the Pet Prescription Team therapy dogs.

Project Goal:

Mentoring defined as a "...structured and trusting relationship that will bring these young people together with caring therapy dogs/volunteers.

Offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing...competence and character.

All funds will be used for continuing and building this program as well as facilitate the therapy dog programs for all Juvenile Hall locations in Los Angeles County and Orange County.

Pet Prescription Team Mission Statement:

The Pet Prescription Team (PPT©) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educate people and support programs that endorse the “Healing Hearts Through Pets” philosophy. Pet Prescription Team trains and screens volunteers and their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities. The Pet Prescription Team goal is to improve the lives of people based on the premise that pets are good for our health and well being and enhance the lives of people by promoting the human-animal bond through animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy visits.

Brief description of the services the Pet Prescription Team organization provides the community:

We are an all volunteer therapy dog organization who provide visitations to Twin Towers Jail, Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail, Lynwood Women’s Jail, Los Angeles County Juvenile Hall ( Eastlake Juvenile Hall, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, Camp Rockey), Los Angeles County Human Trafficking Bureau, local area hospitals, assisted care facilities, rehab facilities, mental health facilities, library programs, hospice, and special needs children's homes/schools.

The animal assisted therapy visits offer an unconditional healing bond to all they visit. The therapeutic use of pets as companions has gained increasing attention in recent years for a wide variety of patients - people with cancer, the elderly, people with disabilities, and the mentally ill. Unlike people, with whom our interactions may be quite complex and unpredictable, animals provide a constant source of comfort and focus for attention. Animals bring out our nurturing instinct. They also make us feel safe and unconditionally accepted.
