In the early hours of Tuesday morning, our vibrant, intelligent, caring and talented nephew Weston was diagnosed with Leukaemia. No Leukaemia is good, but this one is a little less common. It’s called Mature B Cell Leukaemia – otherwise known as Burkitt’s Leukaemia / Lymphoma and is one of the more aggressive forms of children’s cancer. To put this in perspective, the cells duplicate every 25 hours and Weston had mild symptoms for no more than one week. The Oncologist says that if we had delayed performing a blood test for a fortnight, he would have died. To say we are shocked is an understatement.
The plan for the next 6 months is aggressive chemotherapy, with most of the time spent in the Queensland Children’s Hospital. He was only diagnosed yesterday, but he has already had a bone marrow biopsy and his first round of chemo is tomorrow. Survival rates are 80%, which are reasonable odds if you were placing a bet, but devasting news when you are talking about a human being, a nephew or your own child.
We cannot even comprehend the impact on his immediate family. Amy and James are the most dedicated parents our there and they are looking down the barrel of a hellish 6-months. With 3 younger children, including a 5-month old, we want to support them as much as we can. The money raised will go directly to the Allen household so they can take some time off work and focus on family. We all wish we could take Weston’s place, but as that is not an option, we can at least allow his mum or dad to always be by his side.
