YURI'S JOURNEY!! HELP FIGHT EPILEPSY

YURI'S JOURNEY TO BECOMING SEIZURE FREE. FIGHT EPILEPSY!! Yuri is a very sweet child. He is the middle child of our fellow nurse/friend&co-worker. Yuri was born a normal kid just like everyone else. He used to be happy and playful kid. But now, due to his illness, he became very sensitive to light, noise and crowd. Yuri has been pulled out of his kindergarten school due to his uncontrollable seizures. His speech & behavior and cognition and development has been affected. Midnight of year 2014 when Yuri was only 2 year-old, his mom found him unresponsive and already stiff that she has to do immediate CPR. Thank God yuri was revived and with ems he was brought immediately to Regina General Hospital Emergency Dept. That was the time they were told Yuri had seizures during the night. For 2 years since that night, Yuri has had a couple of grand mal seizures which they were only told "Febrile Seizures" so he was constantly given Diazepam rectally PRN everytime he has seizures. March 2016 Yuri had a cardiac arrest at Pasqua Hospital recovery room right after his dental surgery. He was revived and transferred to RGH. They did all the tests they need to do and this time an EEG was performed which showed up "Primary Generalized Epilepsy with Absence Seizures." This is the first time they were given a diagnosis.  Epilepsy is defined as a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Yuri was then started on Keppra but it didn't work so he was given Lamotrigine 100mg bid. For over 1 year and 10mos yuri has been free of grand mal seizures. The whole family was very happy. October 11, 2017 Yuri got admitted again after he developed a "new onset" focal seizure.  Clobazam 10mg bid was added to his meds. Despite the medication, he is still having on & off focal seizures so they had to increase his clobazam dosages. His seizure subsided a bit. But on Nov 23, 2017  he was admitted again, this time his seizures were uncontrollable. Another EEG was done that showed up "Multiple Seizures" This time Ativan was added to his meds. Yuri's seizures are getting worse, happening more frequently and aggressively than ever. The family are getting frustrated especially that there is no pedia neuro here in regina. All are phone orders from a peds neuro in saskatoon (how sad). With his uncontrollable focal seizures and seeing him deteriorating, the family decided and insisted to get a referral for a second opinion out of province like calgary/edmonton hoping for a proper diagnosis, more aggressive tests like video eeg and right medications to control his seizures. Over the course of the last 5 years of Yuri's life, he has been in and out of the hospital due to his other medical condition which are Thalassemia & Asthma. We can't wait any longer as every seizure has the potential to kill Yuri. We desperately need everyone's help to give Yuri his childhood back. To let him enjoy & explore the world around like every other child. On behalf of Jhoanna, We, her co-workers & friends from the Hemodialysis Unit at the RGH had set up this Fundraising page to help them financially as they seek help outside of regina. Jhoanna unfortunately has been on "return to work" since November 2016 due to a work injury, she took LOA this time to bring Yuri to Edmonton as she has maxed her Family Leave while her partner will be left behind with their 2 kids in Regina. To the sweetest little boy Yuri- please know that you are not alone in this battle. God is with you and so are all of us who are continually praying for your fast recovery and soon be "Seizure FREE"!!! We thank everyone for your thoughts, prayers and donations from the bottom of our hearts. We will keep you all posted regarding Yuri's status.
