These are just a few words to describe our good friend Dan Sletten. For as long as I have known Dan, he has
always been all of those things and has many more attributes that make him into
the wonderful man that he is and has always been.
Dan has been a very blessed man up until recently. Within the past month, Dan's life has been thrown upside down, but before I explain his current situation, let me go back to last year. Dan, his wife Sheri, and their two boys welcomed a little girl named Addison into the world. While Addison has been a true blessing to not only their family, but everyone who has come into contact with this precious little girl, there were complications with her birth. Addison decided to come a little early and following Sheri's water breaking and 24 hours of labor, the placenta tore from her uterus causing Sheri to hemorrhage and lead to an emergency C section. Addison, in the beginning of her life, was having difficulty breathing and had to be intubated so she could breathe. If that wasn't enough, a few days later Addison developed pneumonia and had to have her lungs drained. After about 6 weeks in the NICU, Addison had finally passed all of her tests and was able to go home. This past August 14, we celebrated Addison's 1st birthday. She has truly been a miracle!
Things were really starting to turn around! His family is healthy, his family is happy, his wife is pregnant with a boy (their last according to Sheri), and he had finally landed his dream job this September.
As if all of that heartache and pain wasn't enough from Addison's birth, a couple weeks ago, Dan was having extreme pain in his lower abdomen, and had to have emergency surgery to remove a tumor that was cutting off the blood supply to his testicles. After all the lab work, the tests came back:Dan has Testicular Cancer. At first sign, he was told of two different options: chemo or surgery to remove the lymph nodes:only 1 catch, his tumor markers had to come down. After all of his lab work, his tumor markers were not only NOT going down, but were on the rise. He decided to get a second opinion and that's when he found out that that the cancer might have spread. Now scans need to be done of his brain and lungs and chemo must be started right away.
As if all of this isn't enough for this family to deal with, here is one more thing:Dan's medical insurance does not go into effect until November. They have been paying out of pocket for all test, appointments, etc. He will be in and out of work, not bringing in a steady paycheck because of the intensity of the chemo the doctor's are saying is imperative to his recovery and cure. The chemo will be 3 different types, two of which will be administered 5 consecutive days every 3-4 weeks for 3 cycles and then another type that is given once a week for 12 weeks.
