Matthew Hommel Medical Fund

I won't forget getting that call on the night of November 15. My little brother had got his leg pulled into the corn head of the combine and was rushed to the hospital. From Webster he was air flighted to Sioux Falls where he has been receiving care. Upon arrival he was immediately taken into surgery to repair a severed artery in his leg and investigate damage to the shin bone which had shattered. He was then taken to the ICU for constant monitoring. Seeing him lay in that bed was devastating. He was in so much pain but there was nothing we could do but let the doctors and nurses do what they thought was best. On November 17 he went in for second surgery for clean up on the leg. The surgeon found dead muscle which was removed and some that was questionable and left to see if it would heal. His surgery left an affect on his foot movement but with a simple brace on the foot should be able to walk fairly normal when the time comes. Later that afternoon he was moved out of ICU into a regular room to rest for the weekend. On November 21 a third surgery was done to check the questionable muscle that was left. All looked well and on November 24 a surgery will be done to put a rod in the leg so the fracture can heal. Updates to come on that. Last year Matthew was in the hospital in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls after developing MRSA in the femur bone of his right leg (same leg as recent injury). Because of this extra caution has to be taken with the risk of infection. Our family is so grateful for all the prayers received to help Matthew recover as well as he has so far. But he has a long road ahead of him yet and we still aren't certain how things will turn out but we are keeping a positive attitude. But with no insurance and previous medical bills stress is right along with it. So I want to start a fund for Matthew and my dad. Between running a farm and helping Matthew recover the last thing I want them to worry about is how they're going to pay the bills and I'd love to surprise them with this gift. If you are unable to give a simple share to spread the message would be just as great! Thank you to everyone for your kindness and love for our family!
