"Maple for Mary" is bringing Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs, New York together to support Mary Powell in her battle against Cancer.
Mary and her family recently moved to Chicago, but lived here in Saratoga Springs for 20 years. She worked at Maple Avenue Middle School for over 6 years and continues to maintain ties to our community. She not only was a dedicated school nurse at the Middle School but also a friend to many. Her friendly, sincere and uplifting disposition is what draws people in- then and even now.
She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Anal Cancer in December of 2011. Mary had no predisposing risk factors. After undergoing grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments in 2012, she was finally rewarded with the news that there was no more cancer.
Unfortunately, this summer at a routine follow-up visit, she was told the cancer had returned...now in her lungs and pelvis. Although devastated by the news, Mary, her husband Bernie, and their three daughters, Kirstyn, Morgan and Kelsey, have vowed to fight back. She was accepted into an experimental chemotherapy trial through MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. She started her treatments 3 weeks ago and continues to have more ahead of her. The treatments are weekly. She and Bernie fly each week from Chicago to Texas and then back home in order to receive what we all hope will be the miracle she needs.
That's where "Maple for Mary" comes in! We are trying to offset some of the costs associated with her cancer treatments. Our goal is to raise $2,000.00 for Mary. Please help us reach our goal.
