Sage's Surgery

Donation protected
On November 4th 2017, Blount County Animal Shelter sent out an email desperately pleading for volunteers to come pick out a foster dog, Trish (my roommate) and I drove out to the shelter. While trying to find a dog that would be the best fit in our household we stumbled across Sage, a sweet young Pitbull who had obviously been through a lot. She had a bald spot on her head, covered in scars, because she was found with tape embedded into her forehead. Sage also wasn't putting any weight on her left hind leg, and the shelter was waiting on the X-ray results to tell us why. We knew she needed a nice warm bed and brought her home where she instantly clicked with all our animals and humans. Wanting nothing more than to be cuddled every second. We have recently discovered that Sage's back leg injury is an old traumatic hip dislocation. Due to the fact that the injury is old and the joint capsule has been destroyed, the vet informed us that she will need to undergo a femoral head osteotomy (FHO) surgery. The FHO will help repair her leg, giving her more comfort and mobility. The orthopedic surgeon who has offered to do the surgery has informed us it will be upwards of $2,000 and neither the shelter nor trish and I can afford that expense on our own so we are in desperate need of your help! Please share and donate!
PLEASE READ: Trish and I have gotten several comments and pieces of unsolicited advice about the price of Sage's surgery and where we could go to get it done cheaper. While we appreciate your concern and know your heart is in the right place, we are well aware of these other options. The first veterinarian we consulted with offered to do the surgery for $500, but referred us to Dr. Blackford (an orthopedic surgeon) because he believed that she would give Sage the best chance at a complete recovery. The injury is an old and complicated traumatic hip dislocation with a bone chip. This makes the surgery more elaborate than a standard FHO and in order to ensure we are giving her the best odds of success, we want the surgery to be done by a specialist. She is not our dog, meaning it would be unfair to take the cheaper route and run the risk that whoever adopts her has to pay for more surgeries or the costs of other complications that could arise. If you have any questions, please message us and we will be happy to explain our reasoning further.
