NCP 12 Hour Volleyball Marathon 4 Cancer

Donation protected
The Mustang Volleyball Program at Northside College Preparatory High School is participating in a 12 hour volleyball tournament to raise money for the Falk Brain Tumor Center at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The 45 members of our volleyball program are asking for donations. The Mustangs are competing in honor of Casey Patton.

Casey began having vision problems in February 2006. That fall she was diagnosed with optic glioma, a malignant tumor inside her optic nerve. She went through brain surgery in October of 2006, but the tumor was inoperable. Casey went through an 18-month course of chemotherapy treatments at Children's Memorial Hospital. After being around patients much younger than herself, Casey and her friends launched the "Be the Cure" campaign in May of 2007 and began selling T-shirts with that slogan. Their goal was $3,500 but their campaign well surpassed their goal, raising over $40,000, all of which has been donated to Children's Memorial Hospital. In 2008, Casey decided to go to school part-time. The long-term survival rate for her cancer is 70 percent, but her tumor shrunk 25 percent making her doctors hopeful for a full recovery. Two years ago, new problems struck Casey and she spent some time at Massachusetts General Hospital. She returned home and last summer was plagued with headaches and fatigue. Doctors believed the tumor was swelling and put Casey on steroids and narcotics for the pain. This was not an acceptable solution and Casey's family took her to a neurologist at Northwestern who specialized in brain tumor kids with headaches. Her MRI at that time was normal and Casey went back to school last August. She is currently in nursing school and is doing well, aside from the typical school stress!

The Mustangs have learned that less than 3% of all government-funded cancer research dollars goes to pediatrics and only a small percent of that funding is used for brain tumor research. At this time, children with pediatric brain tumors die at a rate that is four times as high of children with leukemia. This is why the Mustang Volleyball Program at Northside College Prep has decided to raise money for the Falk Brain Tumor Center at Children's Memorial Hospital, adding to the money raised by Casey's "Be the Cure" campaign. This center is doing research to find new and safer treatments for children with brain cancers. Please help the Mustangs by donating for our seventh annual event. Your donation will help save the lives of children like Casey and will be added to the volleyball program's current contribution of over $38,000. We hope to double last year's donation. Please support us and our cause if you can. Thank you in advance!
