4PRelief, an organization comprised of Puerto Rican born and raised professionals living both in the US and Puerto Rico, originated in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Maria. As we watched in dismay the destruction Maria left behind in Puerto Rico, we jumped into action. Initially we started with an Amazon Wish List, through which we were able to provide essential supplies to people in senior homes in the metro San Juan area and were able to reach out to families in need who live in the mountainous areas of the island in towns like Jayuya, Utuado and Villalba. As recovery efforts progressed and the needs of those most affected by the devastation became clearer, the effort evolved into a GoFundMe campaign and a recent fundraiser event that served as funding for our initial relief effort.
As our people on the ground in Puerto Rico traveled to distant points in the island to deliver supplies, it became evident that not even the most basic necessities were being provided in these areas. People were and still are living in deplorable conditions; some are still without a roof or tarp, clean drinkable water, and whole families sleeping on the only mattress left following the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. To make matters worse, numerous businesses are closing, leaving many unemployed and without a way to get back on their feet.
These are the reasons we are pushing forward. This is why we need your help. What started as an effort to provide immediate relief has turned into a long-term commitment to help Puerto Rican communities that need it the most.
Currently we are focused on providing better living conditions for 56 families living in the community El Salto deep in the mountain region of Jayuya. We have reached out to the community leaders, who have pinpointed the families and individuals that require the most assistance. It is our hope that through our Christmas initiative “Safe Dreams” (“Suenos Seguros”) we are able to bring some peace of mind and a little comfort to these families during the holiday season. Our goal is to provide these families with bundles containing basic supplies that they are currently unable to get themselves, such as a mattress, sheets, pillows, towels, mosquito nets, tarps, water purification tablets, and personal hygiene products.
We are also ensuring that all supplies acquired with donations are purchased from Puerto Rican vendors, which will hopefully help stimulate the local economy.
This cause is near and dear to us, and we hope that with your help we will be able to spread hope and a sense of security to these families and numerous others in the future.
