As some of you may know, Mike was in a car accident on October 4th, 2017 on the way home from a concert. He suffered many internal injuries (to the liver, kidney, colon, and lungs) in addition to 9 broken ribs and a ruptured diaphragm. Many of his doctors have said he was lucky to even survive such a hard hit. But we know he's a tough dude!
Due to the trauma and severity of his injuries, Mike also developed pneumonia and went into respiratory failure to where a ventilator could no longer support his oxygenation. He was put on ECMO, a machine that takes blood out of the body, puts oxygen into it, and puts it back into the body. This allowed his lungs to rest and heal, while still allowing his body to get enough oxygen. After 16 days on ECMO, it was successfully removed, and Mike's lungs began to start properly functioning again!
Although he's taking large positive strides towards a full recovery, Mike still has a long journey ahead of him. There will be a lot of physical therapy and rehabilitation he will need in the next coming months.
If you know Mike, he's not one to ask for help...But good thing he has so many friends and family that are willing to help! You guys have already been so wonderful and generous to all of us Leonards; however, we keep having people asking us "How can we help?!"
The Mike Leonard Fund is a way that we're collecting money just for Mike. He will have plenty of medical bills to pay and even more expenses down the road to give him the care he needs. Donating to him will allow him to not have to worry about trying to find the money for his care.
