Carrie’s Cancer Journey: $$$ Edition

Update: Due to the incredible generosity of a family member who is sending me a check in the mail, I have been able to lower the online goal to just $2,820. What a blessing! Thanks to everyone who is helping me get through this.

---------------------------------------

This is difficult for me to do—to ask for money, especially publicly—but I can put it off no longer. (You can’th see me as I type this, but I think I have a kind of cringing/blushing expression on my face. Can you picture that? No, no—not with hair, that hasn’t grown back yet. Picture a scarf instead. There it is!)

I am beyond relieved and grateful that my battle against breast cancer has been successful. It has certainly been a difficult journey, most of which is now blessedly behind me. And I have had such an amazing show of help from friends, family and coworkers. Meals, housecleaning, gift cards, grocery runs, rides to the hospital... (and an enormous quantity of patience in listening to me complain about my chemo-related ailments...) I am sincerely thankful for you all. ❤️

However, I now find myself facing a wee bit of financial difficulty for multiple reasons:

1. While I have paid some of my medical bills from earlier in the year thanks to some local nonprofits that help out breast cancer patients, I still owe quite a lot. (My max out-of-pocket was $5,500.) They haven’t sent Guido & Vinny to threaten breaking my knees yet, but they just might.

2. I am about to undergo major surgery (DIEP breast reconstruction) and, after 4 days in the ICU, I will have a difficult recovery at home for 6-8 weeks. During this time, I will not be able to work full-time and will receive a partial salary only. I must come up with the difference to pay my mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc. It somehow seems a tad important to keep the electricity and gas on with winter on the way.

3. I have car repairs that can’t wait any longer or it won’t be safe to drive. It would be silly for me to have gone to all this trouble to not die of cancer and then die from a car crash, no?

If you have been blessed with extra resources and are inclined to ease my financial burden, I would be ever so grateful for your help. Any amount is much appreciated. If there is anything I have learned from this experience it’s that people can be amazingly generous and helpful when a crisis hits. I had no idea so many people cared about me. And I really have needed a lot of people to share the load. So I’m putting this out there with the hope that enough different people will help make up the total. (You... your third cousin twice removed... that guy over there named Horace... whoever.)

With sincerest thanks, Carrie ❤️
