I am a cousin to this beautiful family who lost their home and then their loved one. Loss. Suffering. Tragedy. All things we spend our lives trying to avoid. Yet the care that rises up in these moments is a living demonstration of the love, compassion and community that would have remained hidden in the normal business of life. Laura and her family have faced suffering and loss before. So when Lexie called for the third time in just a few minutes, Laura decided that she had better answer the phone. Knowing her daughter was safe and unhurt made the news of their house being on fire seem a relief in comparison. Imagine the blow it was to later hear that Laura’s husband, Michael Perry, had passed away in the fire. It is a painful process with a long recovery ahead for Laura and her children Jesse & Lexie.
