My Volunteer Trip to Thailand

Donation protected
Hi everyone!

I am excited to share some big news with you! This winter I will be volunteering in Thailand. I have been accepted to a volunteer program in Northern Thailand with COSA, Children's Organization of Southeast Asia. COSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of human trafficking and exploitation through education and community empowerment. For six weeks I will live at a shelter with 25 young girls, who are at risk of being exploited by their own families.

Families in this community are accustomed to a culture of obligation, where the needs of the families trump the betterment of their daughters. Young women and children are expected to engage in sexual or agricultural labor as a means to escape poverty. Through education, COSA and its volunteers empower each and every girl at the shelter to lead a different way of life. COSA gives the girls the opportunity to go to college, and pursue a career of her choice.

When I was in college, I studied human trafficking. The idea alarmed me, but the problem seemed so foreign and out of my control. I was very excited to discover COSA and would very much like the opportunity to help empower young women who are at risk.

I am taking an unpaid leave of absence from work and dedicating my professional skills to fulfill my genuine desire to help others. While I am gone, I'll miss my birthday and football playoff season! Admittedly it will be tough, but I am confident my six weeks abroad will provide a valuable experience and make a positive impact on the lives of these young girls. My volunteer responsibilities will include teaching English classes, leading workshops, playing games, coaching sports, and being an overall mentor to the girls.

COSA is a non-profit organization so I will be paying for my meals and accommodations. I also will have to cover the vast expenses of traveling overseas including; flights (it costs about $2,500.00 to fly from Boston to Bangkok), visas, travel insurance, and vaccinations. I am fundraising for my trip to help cover these costs.

I kindly ask for your help to make this trip possible. I will volunteer for a total of 42 days. My goal is to raise $2,500.00, and I am asking for your support. Consider donating 50 cents or 1 dollar for each day I am there. Even a modest donation can make a big difference.

If you would like more information about the organization or want to get involved, please contact me.

Thanks in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity!
Laura
