Hello and welcome to our GoFundMe page, from all of us at A Rat's Tail Rescue. Thank you from the bottom of our rat-hearts for taking the time to read this, even if you decide not to donate. Getting the word out that we are not bad animals or pets is always worth it and means a lot to us. Rats are often misunderstood and so often, seen as unsightly dirty little creatures you should be afraid of or disgusted at. This is simply not true, and if you give us a moment of your time, and see our cute pictures, maybe you might find it in your hearts to think differently about us.
We have all arrived at this small rescue group because our previous owners either could not or did not want to care for us any longer. Some of our stories are tragic, involving cruel circumstances, while others are just based on our owners not being able to give us the love and attention we so desperately need. Take my good friend, Nicholas, for instance. His photos are too graphic for this site and were removed, but can be seen on our facebook photos album, (please be warned as they are graphic) and his story is heartbreaking. He arrived here about two years ago with a deep, gaping wound to his back, between his shoulder blades. It had gone untreated for so long, that severe infection had set in, as well as a maggot infestation. His owners no longer wanted him, as they were disgusted by him, so they dropped him off here, where he received love, much needed life saving medical treatment, and the promise life would get so much better. And it did. Nicholas survived his traumatic wounds and will live here forever. He will never be unloved again or experience pain.

Bella, otherwise known as MooseFace, is a rat who was prone to mammary tumors. She had to undergo three surgeries to remove them. It is very common for female ratties to grow these tumors, which are usually harmless, but they will grow larger than our bodies when left untreated. This is MooseFace after one of her surgeries.

Winter, also known as The Princess, a.k.a. Snow Angel, alias...ugh, you get the picture, she was a legend around here. Winter was originally named "The Freak," by her previous owner. She was purchased to breed, her babies would be ripped from her, frozen, and sold to a pet store for snake food. She came to live here only after her original owners landlord found out she was living there and forced the man to find another home for her. Thankfully, Winter was accepted here. Sadly, Winter is no longer with us. She passed away a year ago in April at a very old age, but she will never be forgotten. Her memory serves as a reminder that every rats life changes for the better when they are saved. She is the all white rat catching a nap on the people's bed in the pic below.

And last but definitely not least, my name is Nancy, named after the great Nancy Grace, because of my outgoing, spicy, and unruly attitude. I was originally supposed to be dinner for a snake, but instead I was lucky enough to wind up here. Here is where I find a never-ending supply of love and safety. (I'm the pretty orange and white rat in the picture below. Notice how dainty I cross my arms for the photo!)

These are but just a few of our stories, there are so many more.

Half of the battle is won, because we have found a wonderful home in a rat-sanctuary, but sadly, without donations for our constant need for food, medical needs, bedding, and other costs, as well as rat safe cages, our people pets cannot support us or take any more of us in who desperately seek what we have found. Fundraising is hard for this rescue, as we were born rats. Most people donate to dogs and cats, which is so very honorable, but that leaves us out in the cold so often. Our people pets are not asking for a lot, and neither are we. Any donation you make to us will be used to fill our bellies with only the healthiest food, give us clean cage-houses, and allow us to go to the doctor if and when we need to. And, if you can't donate, we understand. You could help by spreading the word that rats are great, loving, and beautiful pets who just want to be loved like any dog or cat out their. Don't be afraid of us, we have big hearts in our little bodies, and only get sad when we are looked down on.
We may be small, but you would be surprised how many of us are in need of good homes. No clean, well run shelter or sanctuary can operate or stay open without the goodness of the average person out their. Please consider making a donation, of any size, to our cause. We are rats, yes, but we deserve a good life and a second chance. Please help make that a possibility, and please note that even a small donation will make a difference between life or death for a rat in need of a home at our shelter. Thank you so much from all of us ratties.
Sincerely,
Nancy, Resident Rat at A Rat's Tail Rescue
