Jazmine’s Battle

My sister, Jazmine “Jazzy” Gonzalez, has been hospitalized since 10/13/17 with an extremely rare, autoimmune disorder called Anti NMDA receptor encephalitis caused by a teratoma found in her ovary. Jazmine is a loving daughter/sister/aunt/niece/cousin & friend. A devoted Teacher (Social Studies & PE). She loves being a teacher, and is driven by her need to make changes in this world by positively impacting the youth she works with. She’s a history buff, a Game of Thrones fan, and a loyal member of Dumbledore’s Army. She’s an active, intelligent, sweet, funny, loving person with a zest for life and adventure. This condition has broken her. She is now unable to speak, she repeats 1 or 2 words at a time over and over, she is bed-ridden, unable to eat, and does not make eye contact. She is suffering from horrible symptoms from the encephalitis. On top of this, and even rarer, the teratoma was in fact cancerous. Chemo is now part of her future treatment plan. She is fighting, but the doctors are unable to say how long she will be hospitalized or how long before we see significant improvement. We are devastated, Jazmine is a light in our family. We are trying to maintain Jazmine’s home, car, and now the coming medical bills. She will soon no longer have sick days at work.
