Is This Really Happening?!

“Is this really happening?” Some of us may use that term in our lives at times where the event falls in their favor. One may ask themselves:“Is this really happening?” while walking down the aisle to marry their love of their life.“Is this really happening?” while in labor waiting for the delivery of your first born beautiful baby girl.“Is this really happening?” while walking on stage to receive your diploma for graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.“Is this really happening?” when checking your results and discovering that you are a newly certified Registered Nurse.“Is this really happening?” while delivering your second beautiful baby girl.“Is this really happening?” when receiving an offer letter from the hospital which you applied for a position. My name is Jonas Dela Pena. I would like for you, if I may, to take those scenarios above and picture a young, loving, selfless, hard-working, beautiful mother of two. That woman is my wife, Crystal (Melissa) Dela Pena, the mother of our two beautiful children Malia (7) and Ava (1). The above scenarios are ones of the many points in Melissa’s life where she can reflect back, smile, and answer, “Yes. That really happened.” Recently, Melissa was feeling under the weather with very little energy to take care of her children. She knew that she was ill, but did not know what exactly was going on. After a visit to urgent care, where her blood was drawn, she was advised to go to the ER for further treatment. “What is going on?” is all I can think. Melissa was eventually admitted after the ER and was given multiple blood and platelet transfusions to try and maintain positive levels. However, the transfusions were not helping as the Doctors were expecting. Then the news was broken to Melissa: “You are going to be transferred to another hospital where they can provide more extensive care. We are planning your discharge tonight and you will be admitted to another hospital.” It was at that point where my wife and I found out that she was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Different emotions were going through both of our heads along with millions of questions. “What will this mean for my children?” “Will our children have this leukemia?” “Will I be able to continue to support my family?” Question after question was coming up in our heads which we were so eager to get the answers to, but we knew that these answers cannot be provided until the right time called for it. At this point, Melissa really had one question in mind: “IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?” Melissa has been in the hospital since September 25, 2017 receiving chemo therapy to combat the leukemia cells. After all the chemo battles, Melissa still has her strong, positive, loving, fighter’s mentality to keep her pushing through. Being away from her children is one of the tough patches in her fight, but Facetime with the kids always cheers her up. There is nothing Melissa wouldn’t do for the betterment of her children and this battle with leukemia is on the top of her list. The Doctors advised that Melissa continue to receive chemo therapy after discharge and that she will be out of work for 2 years or possibly even more. As Melissa will be out of work, support for her children may be difficult to come by.It is with the utmost humility, that Melissa and I ask to see it in your heart, to help support us with prayers and generosity while our family goes through this trying time. With your generosity through donations, Melissa and I can reflect on all of the love that has been bestowed upon us and ask: “Is this really happening?” Once the battle is over and with your support and generosity, it would mean everything for Ava, Malia, and Myself to have Melissa say, once again: “YES. THAT REALLY HAPPENED.” Thank you for your thoughts, love, and generosity. May God Bless You.
