Help Fix Lucy's Broken Heart

Tax deductible

Dear Friends and Fellow Dog Lovers,

On February 3, we adopted our four-legged child, Lucy, from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. She is a wonderfully energetic Boxer-mix and has quickly become a part of our family. As many of you know from our Facebook posts and changing social life, we spend nearly 100% of our time with Lucy. We've taken her to vineyards in Virginia, hiking in the Shenandoah mountains, to the beach in South Carolina, and to countless dog parks and bar patios. In our small apartment, Lucy has claimed most of the space for herself and has better spots on the couch and bed than Frank.

In early September, Lucy became very sick with an unknown infection. Our regular veterinarian put her on an aggressive course of antibiotics and hospitalized her for several days to give her IV fluids, and we thought for a couple weeks that we might have had the infection beat. Unfortunately, Lucy has lost ground over the past week, and is once again dangerously sick.

Yesterday, we took Lucy to see a specialist in internal medicine at VCA Southpaws. Today, she saw a cardiologist at Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates. The doctors are now fairly confident that Lucy has bacterial endocarditis in her mitral valve - a condition that results from an infection moving to her heart. Her prognosis is uncertain. We've started another aggressive treatment plan, and Lucy is hospitalized at Southpaws receiving a heavy dose of antibiotics as I type this.

As I'm sure you can imagine, this has been a stressful time for us both emotionally and financially. We have already spent well over $5000 on Lucy's care, and we are not sure how much more it is going to cost. In creating this Go Fund Me page, we do not expect to fully pay for Lucy's veterinary bills. Lucy is our dog, and we know that her care is our responsibility. However, we've reached a point where we are not sure that we'll be able to afford much more.

To that end, we reached out to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, the wonderful organization from whom we adopted Lucy, for ideas and suggestions. Lucky Dog offered to help us raise some of the money that we need through their social media connections. Any donations made to Lucky Dog through this site are 100% tax deductible. Lucky Dog will also receive 20% of the total amount that we are able to raise, and they will provide us with 80% to help pay for Lucy's veterinary bills.

Thank you for coming to read about Lucy. Any contribution that you are willing to make would be extremely helpful. And if you're interested in adopting/rescuing a dog, or just supporting Lucky Dog's awesome work in DC/Virginia/Maryland, visit their website at http://www.luckydoganimalrescue.org/.

Thank you again,

Frank & Laura
