Support Derrick Sanderlin

Donation protected
Our friend, Derrick Sanderlin, was injured on May 29 while protesting in front of San Jose’s City Hall.

Derrick is well-known as a community organizer and musician, and is beloved for his kind, empathetic, and good humored nature.  He is an integral part of the South Bay cultural scene, having coordinated musical acts for the Jtown Artwalk and performing regularly at Cafe Stritch.  His wife, Cayla, works for an East San Jose nonprofit providing support to local families.

On the first day of protests for George Floyd and against police brutality, Derrick was seen deescalating tensions between drivers and protesters on Highway 101 and later in front of City Hall between police and protesters.  Derrick trained San Jose Police Department officers on implicit bias for several years and pleaded for officers to not fire rubber bullets at protestors.

A San Jose Police Officer shot Derrick directly in the groin with a rubber bullet at close range.  Derrick suffered a ruptured testicle and required surgery that may leave him and Cayla unable to have children together.

All funds donated here will go directly to Derrick and Cayla to support them with the following:
- To provide for alternative methods of having children. Derrick and Cayla are consulting with their doctors to discern the best option for them and have considered IVF and adoption.
- To provide for any medical costs incurred from Derrick's injury that are not covered by their insurance.
- To provide for therapy for both Cayla and Derrick to process these events.
- To provide for lost time at work in order to deal with Derrick's injury.

When this campaign is done, Cayla will directly withdraw the funds raised.

Derrick and Cayla do encourage you to consider donating to Silicon Valley DeBug and PACT, who work to support marginalized communities in and around San Jose.

We, as friends of Derrick, know how much Derrick and Cayla do to take care of their community.  Please join us as we help to take care of them.

About the Organizer:
My name is Steven Rozzi. I have known Derrick and Cayla since 2013 when we served as interns together for Servant Partners, a nonprofit working in San Jose. I also worked with Derrick as a barista at Roy's Station in Japantown. You may have seen Derrick and I performing music together around the Bay Area. I am now a middle school history teacher in Oakland, CA. It is only with the help of the amazing community around Derrick and Cayla that we have been able to organize this campaign. Thank you so much for your support!
