I am the proud Nana of two wonderful grandsons Ashton (9) and Gage.
Gage is the youngest son of, Nova Scotia residents, Amanda Mattinson (my daughter) & Chad Fortune. He is 4 years old and suffers from severe uncontrolled Epilepsy. Recently he has been referred to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario (almost 2000 km away).

On the outside, looking at Gage you would think he is just a typical little boy until you notice all the battle scars he has been left with from seizures that occur with no warning; such as, black eyes, a bruised forehead, arms and knees, a split lip, or scars from where he needed stitches.....and this is just what you can see.

On the inside, as a result of having multiple seizures and medication side effects, he suffers from chronic fatigue, hyper active and aggression he can't control, loss of appetite, embarrassment, loss of bladder control, nausea, & depression.

So very sad to see a little child endure such trauma in three years.

Gage's battle with Epilepsy started at the age of one; at which time everyone was hoping it was something he would 'grow out of'. unfortunately that hasn't been the case. His Epilepsy is severe, currently having over 60 seizures throughout the day and night and progressing. In his short life he has suffered through many different types of seizures, including: Tonic Clonic, Absence, Mayo Clonic, Atonic, & Febrile. Doctors and family have seen times where he hasn't been able to speak or has had trouble communicating; which could be a sign of regression or that his brain is exhausted from seizure after seizure.

Until now he has been treated by a wonderful family physician, Dr. Peter Blaikie, and a Team of Neurologists at the IWK Childrens Hospital in Halifax, N.S. who have worked with him for three years to find a solution and medication that would help to control his seizures....to no avail. So, upon their referral, Gage is being sent to Toronto; where he will be treated for this illness by a new set of specialist's who, with all hope, will have some much needed answers.

Gage is a handsome boy with striking eyes, an infectious smile, the sweetest giggle, and a personality like no other. Gage and his family need help as they continue down this courageous road of helping him live a long, healthy and happy life.
