Farmer Charlie Tommerdahl and Family

Donation protected
On Thursday, September 28th, Charlie was fixing the barn cleaner, something he had done many times. In a flash he was thrown off balance and his foot was crushed by the cleaner. He has already had two surgeries on his foot but will require at least one more to fix all the broken bones. Charlie will be unable to put any weight on his foot for at least three months, which means he won't be able to do any physical farm work. He has only had about three days off in the last five years. One reason for that is because Charlie is someone who needs to move. He loves immersing himself in his work and seeing his dream to be a dairy farmer come to life. The other reason is because unlike many small family farms, Charlie farms alone without the partnership of other family members. He will now have to hire various people to fill the many roles he singlehandedly filled. Sarah and Charlie are both incredibly hardworking individuals who would never ask for help unless they desperately needed it. When I asked Sarah if it was ok for me to start a GoFundMe page for her and Charlie, she was very hesitant. But after some prodding and reminding Sarah about all the work that needs to be done and the costs they will incur, both Sarah and Charlie gave me their blessing to do this. They want to be transparent and honest about their financial needs. Charlie has health insurance, but the out-of-pocket medical expenses will still be extremely high. On the farm, Charlie covered a few milking shifts per week, fed the cows, cleaned the barns, handled all herd health needs, and fixed broken equipment and tractors. Money has been very tight since the milk prices have plummeted over the last couple of years. To hire this work out for three months or more is going to be impossible to afford.Anyone who has ever worked on a farm or knows what it takes to run a farm, knows what a tough situation Sarah and Charlie are in. While they greatly appreciate all the offers for help with physical labor (which they may still need as they continue to figure things out) right now they could benefit from your financial help. It is never easy to ask others for money so please understand this request doesn't come easily. If you want to help, please consider donating to Sarah and Charlie so they can focus on getting him through his next surgeries and nursing him back to health with two toddlers at home.Thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness. Best,Jen
