Going the Distance for HiHoCa

On October 20th, 2013, I will be running the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon. While I've considered myself a distance runner since middle school cross country, this will be my first 26.2 mile race. With the help of coworkers from Hiram House Camp (HiHoCa), I have been training since Spring. Surrounded by wonderful campers and coworkers, I decided to dedicate this marathon to them and call it "Going the Distance for HiHoCa." I'd like to give back to HiHoCa for continually providing me with a great environment to help others and myself grow as people.

Donations will go to the Campership Fund of Hiram House Camp, a program that helps bring children in need out of the cities and into the 172 acre HiHoCa in Moreland Hills. The mission of HiHoCa is "to enrich the lives of children through camping... and an opportunity to live, play and learn in an environment that is racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse. Hiram House is committed to promoting family values, building character and opening new horizons for youth."

In my 6 years as seasonal staff at HiHoCa, I've built incredible relationships and seen campers do the same. The camp environment allows kids to be kids in a safe setting and challenge themselves with a variety of activities like arts 'n' crafts, horseback riding, rockwall climbing, high ropes, archery, canoeing and swimming. I have seen camp change lives, including my own, and would love to see more kids reached through HiHoCa's Campership program.

I genuinely appreciate any amount donated and look forward to running every mile while thinking of the kids that will benefit from it.
