My husband, Foster Felker, has worked hard his whole life. He has been working at the same place, The Castaway on Lake Alexander in Cushing, MN, since he was 14 years old. He started out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to being the head cook. He is so unbelieveably dedicated to his job. He is always going above and beyond to make sure things at his work run smoothly. He has only taken a few weekends off from work in the 8 years I have known him and they were for our wedding and honeymoon. Those who know Foster well know that he can be quiet at first but when he knows you he loves to give you a hard time and joke around. Foster loves sports and could talk about football and basketball for hours. When he isn't working, Foster likes to spend time with his family. He is great with our neices and nephews who love him dearly. He also just likes to relax and wind down from busy weekends in the kitchen.
During the week of Thanksgiving 2017, Foster started to come down with what I thought was the flu. He had body aches, chills, and a fever which topped 103 degress. These symptoms continued for three days so I made Foser go in to see a doctor. The doctor was unable to determine what was causing Foster's fever and also found that Foster's blood sugar was 300. They decided to admit him to the hospital. Foster spent four days in the hopsital and all kinds of procedures were completed to try and figure out the cause of his continued fever. Foster had multiple blood tests, head scan, chest scan, even a spinal tap. No cause could be identified through all of these tests however after fours days of IV antibiotics, his fever was gone. Foster was discharged with no real answers and was given a diagnosis of febrile illness which is basically a medical term for fever without a known cause. The doctors we talked with feel Foster had some type of infection caused by a tick bite even though all tests came back negative. It was also found that Foster has diabetes which we were not aware of previously. Now that Foster has been home he has been doing well with following a diabetic diet and has lost over 20 pounds. His sugars are managed with Metformin and insulin however his doctor feels Foster will be taken off of insulin as his sugars are stable and he is responding well to Metformin.
Through all of this, I feel like our relationship has only gotten stronger. I was scared to death when he was in the hospital and we were waiting for answers. There were tears shed but I was extremely relieved when he was able to go home and no major heath concern was found to have been the cause of his fever. However, we do have a big burden after his hospital stay and we are asking for your help. Foster didn't have health insurance at the time of his hospitalization. His empoyer is not able to offer medical insurance and to purchase market rate insurance got too expensive forus. The plan was and is to have Foster on medical insurance through my employer as of January 1st. Because of this, Foster has several medical bills which total just under $30,000. Foster is working his primary job as a cook and applying for a second job while I am working full time as a social worker and have a second job as a waitress to help make money to pay these bills but that's just not cutting it. We are both going to work to pay these bils but any help is appreciated. All funds raised will go directly to pay off Foster's medical bills through St. Gabriel's Hospital.
