Help Sara (Salma) Bee there for her Mom

It started as an email. "I haven't had a period in 10 years and I started bleeding today. Weird."

Then another email. "They said I probably have cancer, like they were casually predicting the end of a movie!"

Then a phone call. "I have cancer and I have to have surgery. I am so scared! Please come home."

As many of you know, Sara Ivines, aka Salma Hectic of the ACR Hunnies Roller Derby team, is originally from California. She moved to the sunshine state in 2006 after meeting her future husband, Ryan, and step-daughter, Portia. In the last 3 years, the Ivines family has gone through a devastating table saw injury involving 6 surgeries and 18 months of physical therapy and 2 job lay offs, resulting in a 30% drop in income. So, when Sara learned of her mother's cancer and impending surgery and realized there was no money to pay for a plane ticket and no vacation time to cover her time off, her heart sank and she couldn't get out of bed for the next 24 hours.

Many of the derby community had the priviledge of meeting Lynn, aka Mama Hectic, in June of this year when she came for a visit. Mama Hectic was finally able to see Salma in action against the Orlando Area Derby Revolution, where she earned MVP Blocker. This was only the 5th time in 6 years that this Mother-Daughter pair have been able to see each other.

After receiving the approval from her workplace the take the time off without risk of losing her job, the wheels began to turn. Sara (Salma) has spent the last 4 years building a roller derby team through hours of dedicated design, financial planning and event coordinating. When she put her dilemma into derby terms a solution started to take shape. "This is what I do 6 times a year for every home bout I produce." If she could get a hundred or so people (a nice attendance number at a bout) to give $10 (the price of a standard bout ticket) she just might be able to be there for the woman that had there for her all her life.

Here is the real kicker, her mother's full hysterectomy surgery has been scheduled for Oct 3, 2012, only 12 days away. This date is also only 2 days before the next Hunnies home bout and 3 days before the next Stingers (Jr. league) bout. As dedicated as she is, Sara (Salma) will be missing both of these bouts, if she can raise the necessary funds for a plane ticket to California, food money for while she is there and wages lost. Please help her reach her goal and be there for her Mom during this very scary and traumatic time. This is an All-or-Nothing campaign, so if her goal is not meant, supporters will not be charged.
