Memorial Fund for Suzanne Bernier

This past week, my mother unexpectedly passed away, two months after her 71st birthday.

She loved me immensely and was unfailingly proud of everything I did, from moving to New York so many years ago, to being the first in my family to finish college, to having a career and my own independent life and world.

We had great plans for the coming days and years – trips to Lyman Orchards and California – and never dreamed she would be taken from us so soon.

She also never wanted me (an only child) to worry about her – or anything. If she could have given me the world, she would have. But since I was a teen, money had been tight.

Two years ago, she acquired a new life insurance policy and prioritized the premiums, expecting it to help me on some distant day. But that day came far too soon, shy of the three years required to receive the intended amount. Instead, I received a small fraction of her funeral costs. I was also recently laid off from my job, leaving me in an even more precarious financial position. That's why I'm asking for your help today.

This year on Mother's Day, we went to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for the first and last time. We took the above photo in front of one of the few cherry trees already in bloom. I'll cherish the memory of that day, and hope I continue to make her proud going forward.
