Black Futures Scholarship Fund

Hi there, my name is Tiana Day, and I am the 19-year-old founder of Youth Advocates for Change.

Youth Advocates for Change is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created as a safe space to amplify youth voices through intersectional social justice issues.

I took a gap year after graduating high school in 2020 and found my voice in the Black Lives Matter movement. I began leading protests at age 17, finally feeling like my voice as a young Black woman was being recognized. This is when I founded this organization and fell in love with education. It wasn’t my Kindergarten through 12th-grade experiences that made me fall in love with education but the real-world opportunities I had created for myself with this nonprofit. I fell in love with education because of the skills I was learning from the other students, and I realized so much of what I learned in school wasn’t about celebrating myself and my culture. My problem was I was not passionate about the things I learned. So I took it upon myself to take the gap year to learn, grow and understand the importance and privilege of education.

That’s why my first project when launching this organization was creating a scholarship fund for Black youth and Black futures.

I now proudly can say I am headed to the University of Southern California (my dream school) to study arts, technology and the business of innovation in a multifaceted innovation program at the Iovine and Young Academy.

The stress for me now is how I will pay for school, the stress that all college students face, especially within the Black community. Black students have the least access to resources and opportunities their peers have access to, and I have experienced this first hand. So I understand the financial burden when wanting to follow that passion and go to a university for higher education.

Last year, I raised $30,000 and I’m feeling the utmost privilege to be able to have awarded 5 incredible Black students in August 2022 with scholarships at our inaugural banquet. It did not only inspire me to continue raising funds to distribute to the Black community. Still, it reminded me why I started this organization, though I’ve had many moments of doubt and wanted to give up. Choosing these recipients made every late night, every tear shed and everything in between worth it.

I am looking forward to raising funds for next year's recipients. The funds you choose to donate will go to the futures of incredible Black lawyers, doctors, politicians, scientists etc.

Thank you!
