Immokalee-Irma Relief

This is to help all the people in Immokalee. The school I teach at was a sheltered to over 900 people as well as the other elementary schools, middle school, and the High School which is currently still be used as a result of Hurricane Irma. Since many of our families have no transportation they walked with whatever they could carry and came to school to ride out the storm. Immokalee is an area that has been hit hard. Trailers have leaks, families have no power, ice is hard to come by so food cannot saved from meal to meal. Our families are field and packing house workers and will not have work for weeks to come. Five days after Hurricane Irma devastated our area a caravan of teachers and staff from my school loaded our cars with food and water and went out to find our Students. We found our kiddos eager to go back to school and so happy that their teachers hadn't left them ( evacuation is a hard word to understand for limited English learners and many thought their teachers just left). School will resume in a week and our students can't wait! They miss us and their friends. But most of all they know that school will provide the security of three meals a day. The students are figuring out what an MRE is and have some type of meal each day. So we know they will be eating something on the weekend. Yet we want more for our Students. We want them to be kids...just kids. We plan on sending our students home each Friday with a weekend snack bag. Our kids need to have this little bit of control that they can do something about the hunger pangs while they wait for Monday and school breakfast. Many folks have been asking to help.
