Bring performing arts to Mack MS

Help bring performing arts to Mack Middle School

Our students are between 6th-8th grade and from a low-income neighborhood in Las Vegas. We are in the highest poverty category and have no current funds to produce a musical. Students wanted to perform, and so this year our middle school will be putting on their first ever musical, Annie Junior. That’s where we need your help!

Anyone who has been a part of a musical knows that they are engaging, team-building experiences, that foster communication and public speaking skills that students will use for the rest of their life. They are also very expensive!

Due to budget cuts, our school was forced to eliminate the theatre program last year and at the beginning of this year they were also forced to cut the choir program. This means that many of our students, who are very talented and eager to practice and perform the arts, have no outlet to do so.

As the director and an 8th grade teacher, I am currently gathering resources and materials at my own, and other teachers’ personal expense. Producing a musical can be very difficult without access to adequate resources.  I am so excited to work hard and produce our first musical, but I need the funds to do it.

What’s your money going towards?

Performance Rights ($590)

Costumes
Although we are doing our best to borrow and rent costumes, this is still a large cost in our production!

Makeup
We have a cast of 32. Not to mention 12 year olds playing 40 year olds! That’s a lot of stage makeup!
Some schools can ask parents to pay a costume and makeup fee, but in our area, this is not a realistic thing to ask of our parents/guardians.

Sets & Props
We are staying low budget: no fancy sets or backdrops.  We plan on creating our backdrops from butcher paper with help from students in the art department. Needless to say, our art department has few resources to offer us, adding paint and paintbrushes to our overall cost.

Publicity, Rental Materials, and Saturday Rehearsal Food!

So please, consider donating - any amount will help!

A donation means an opportunity for a student who does not frequently get one. Please help show our students that their zip-code does not determine their access to the arts and humanities. You are helping to create potentially life-changing experiences for students in need.
