Car for Work
The good news is I’ve been offered jobs - until I say I don’t have a car.
For the past year I’ve been working in an AmeriCorps intern program as a computer technology specialist for the School District of Philadelphia, both at its headquarters and in the schools. I was able to practice the skills I learned during two years in technical school, and apply them in a variety of real-world situations.
Now my contract with the school district is over and I’ve been, with great excitement, searching for a job that will pay more than the $175 a week stipend of AmeriCorps, and will use my experience.
I need a car - It sounds so simple. But living on the AmeriCorps stipend was a stretch, especially since I have a seven-year-old son. There’s no bank account.
Any donation would be a great help. The companies that call me for interviews have been mostly outside the city and involve traveling up to two hours by public transit, each way – exhausting and not always dependable. Or they require having a car to service different job sites.
A car will show employers that I can get to work on time every day, and having a car would give me more time at home with my son.
I have other interviews lined up this week that I will take the bus to, but am afraid it will be the same story. I am an experienced IT specialist. Knowing I would be a great fit for a job, but getting passed over because I don't have a way to get there is disheartening.
This is another step on my road to creating a better life for me and my son.
