Hurricane Harvey Relief & College
Hello there. My name is Nia Toomer, and I go by Ren. I'm the one fully in charge of this campaign.
I was born and raised in Texas and have lived here my whole life.
I just graduated highschool and got accepted into my dream school, SCAD. Even though I worked hard to receive money, I only accumulated about roughly 20,000$ in scholarships, and the tuition is 53,000$ a year. I figured it was normal and that I would just have to figure out ways to pay for this eventually over time, but tragedy has struck my already struggling house hold.
I start college next week on the 6th of September. All my college materials were left behind in the house on the second floor and we are unable to get to it and we don't know if it got destroyed or not in the flood. Many of the houses in my neighborhood are underwater completely.
Neither of my parents work. My mother is quite ill and has been on disability for quite a while, struggling with lupus and Schrödinger's disease. My father was a hard working man, and just 3 years from his retirement, was laid off from his job as a manager at AT&T. We live off of my mom's disability check. Things were relatively okay, and we were managing to get by until hurricane Harvey struck and our home, which we had lived in for 17 years, go flooded for the first time, causing tons of damage. We have only one family member to stay with, and things are very hard. Not only are we trying to figure out how to pay for my education, but now we are having to figure out how to pay for repairs to our home, if it even can be repaired after this horrific tragedy.
I am aware that many other families in Texas are suffering as well, but I figured it wouldn't hurt for me to try and help out my own family by asking you, the people, to assist us. Any and all money will first go towards my home being fixed, food and water for the family, and then towards my education expenses. I want to be able to get a great job so that I can make my family's life easy for once. They've all struggled terrible things and have never caught a break. I thank you in advance for any and all support you provide me and my family during these times.
