Hiking for Hounds
My plan is to virtually walk the coastline of the island of Cyprus 403 miles (648km), carrying 55lb (24.9kg), cumulatively over 60 Days starting the 1st February 2021. I’ll post regular progress as I go and if this goes well I have an even bigger challenged in mind for the future.

The Cause
Apollo’s Angels - Rehoming Cyprus Pointers Is a non-profit rescue organisation run totally by volunteers since 2013,  every penny raised goes towards the care and rehoming of abandoned, abused and neglected pointers and similar hunting breeds from across Cyprus, who have now rehomed almost 800 dogs to the UK
Please follow the link below to find out more about the beautiful Apollo, the hounds of Cyprus and how it all began, but be prepared to shed a tear or two.

Each dog rescued and rehomed to the UK needs at least a month in kennels plus food while being assessed and receiving any vet care needed for them to be fit to travel. Vet care includes vaccinations, neutering, parasite treatments,  blood tests and hip X-rays  not to mention any additional treatment that may be needed as a result of their lives before. There’s also all the necessary paperwork and legal hoop jumping needed to get a passport and last but by now means least that all important freedom flight to their forever home. The average cost of each dog in our care is around £1000 , can be much more depending how long the dog has been in our care.

With the current changes caused by Brexit impacting to movement of dogs from the continent to the UK, costs for rescues of this kind are on the increase. Despite this they continue to try and keep the rehoming fees as low as they can by fundraising.

So why am I doing this?
Well for us it started with the loss of our loveable and goofy Labrador Jack who had come to us from the Dogs Trust 8 years earlier and Lucy our OAP pointer letting us know she was missing some canine company. So with that the search began for another rescue to join our family. Unfortunately with an 8 year old, an existing dog, 2 guinea pigs and full time jobs, many UK based rescues had little to offer us within their criteria.
Having seen some friends do the same we extended our search to the continent and I was soon inundated with messages from my wife about one poor soul after another. We communicated with several rescue organisation and finally decided that these were the people we wanted to support. After a few false starts where we fell in love with dogs who’s needs weren’t quiet compatible with our set up a beautiful girl named Bonnie came up on our radar. Long story short she will be with us before this challenge is complete so I’m hoping she can motivate me through the later stages! If you’d like to meet Bonnie and maybe follow her progress as she settles in with us you can like her page athttps://www.facebook.com/Bonnie-found-my-forever-home-101202965277829/
