For those of you who know my father Art Reid, you may recall that he and his wife Jennifer became ordained ministers after his retirement, and have been pastors of a local Christian church in Mandeville, Jamaica for the past 17 years.
They also recognized a great need to feed and care for the many homeless & destitute people in the vicinity of Mandeville, and started a soup kitchen called "Candle In The Dark Care Centre" where they have been providing hot meals, clothing and spiritual care to this community for over 20 years.
A major complication to their life and ministry is that Dad's eyesight has declined in recent years leaving him essentially blind. No longer able to drive or live independently; he must rely on Jennifer and others daily for physical assistance. In spite of this setback, Art & Jennifer have never let it stop them from continuing to serve the homeless community and the Church they pastor. I am humbled and inspired by their positive outlook in the face of adversity and their continued commitment to serve others.
My father had worked for Alcan in Canada for over 20 years, returned to Jamaica where he continued with Alcan as a consultant before evenutally retiring. Years later after the company changed hands, he was informed without warning that their medical insurance had been discontinued. As a result, they were left without any coverage and are uninsurable privately due to their age and preexisting medical conditions.
Two years ago Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer. Our family and close friends rallied together to raise funds for her treatment, which included chemotherapy and other diagnostic procedures and testing necessary for her care. She fought hard and the treatment was successful. In September of 2017, she was given a clean bill of health – there was no cancer present in her body!
Last week, we received the devastating news that the cancer was back - this time in her liver. Jennifer needs immediate and aggressive medical treatment which is estimated to cost over $20,000 USD.
This is something we realize we can't do alone, so on behalf of Art, Jennifer and our extended families, we are reaching out to our broader communities and humbly asking for your support financially as well as your prayers.
