My Mum's Medical Fundraiser

Donation protected
Its hard to let go of pride.

Its one of those times where I really struggle to put my pride aside, and ask all my friends and family to help my family out. Its for a good cause, essentially a small donation to help my mum get through a very difficult and traumatic medical nightmare.

The sad reality of living in South Africa, hospitals are not free like they are in the UK. If you have a problem, you either pay for it for yourself or you are denied healthcare. Before this all began, my mum was a happy mum, cutting hair in her salon, enjoying life and spending time with all her family and friends. For anyone who knew her back then, I guarantee you would have loved her and her sense of humour!

A little history..

Mum has been struggling with her health for the past 10 years or so, first dealing with an incredibly debilitating mental condition called frontal lobe epilepsy, its a horrible condition which strips away your lust for life, your personality and abilities to do anything you care about. You're not allowed to drive, work or do anything, apart from sit at home taking dozens of pills a day. Over the past 10 years, my poor dad has maxed out several credit cards to pay for all the hospital admissions, medicine, therapy, etc, etc. He's such a good dad and husband, but he's literally at the end of his rope and simply cannot do it alone.

My mother was admitted to hospital this last week with a dental infection. Its been lingering for the past 6 weeks and she's been on 6 types of antibiotics as recommended by the dentist. After being admitted, the medical team rushed her into surgery, the infection had grown beyond serious. In the last few days, the bills have been rolling in way beyond what any family or individual can afford to pay. Since the surgery has been completed, the infected area has been treated but is not healing as expected so they are now testing for tumours.

When it comes to your mum, and you hear the word tumour - you forget all about being a proud family trying to cope on your own and you ask for help.

My family and I would appreciate anything you are able to donate, from small to large. All of the proceeds will be put to the hospital bills and after care, and with a little care, hope and prayer - we'll do our utmost best to restore my mum back to full health.

Many Thanks from the van Wyngaardt lads..
