<div>    I’m  happy to say that this year in Vieques we reached a milestone; more of the equipment we helped install was purchased by Viequenses than donated by the solar project.  Sixteen people attended our preliminary meeting; interest in solar plus batteries is higher than ever. Also a breakthrough this year:  We found a source for LiFePo batteries in San Juan where the vendor can service and repair the batteries, and sells kits that are field repairable by us.  And, more good news, we learned that the main inverter companies are opening service shops in San Juan.

<div>   All in all we helped 12 households this year with installations, upgrades, and repairs.  In addition, we held one community meeting, 4 consultations,  and also spent a morning exploring solar energy with students at the 20 de Septiembre Elementary school.

<div>   Financially we accepted a total of $15,800 and spent $15,100. Thank you to everyone who contributed any amount!  As in past years, our all-volunteer labor force was evenly split between Viequense heroes and North American heroes; a big thank you to everyone who helped out, transported materials and tools, racked panels in the sun, and prepared inimitable comida criolla to fuel the effort!  Also a thank you to everyone who contributed to our morning convocation; Puerto Rican poetry, Viequense poetry from the Struggle, Bible verses, and songs.

<div>   In addition to the three neighborhoods in Vieques that have no electricity from the grid, we continue to learn of other Viequenses who lack electricity.  When I met Maria she was walking up the hill from town to her shipping container home holding a dripping bag of ice in one hand and a gallon of gasoline for her generator in the other.  We greeted each other in the shade of a little Malagueta as she explained that LUMA, the private utility, wanted $10,000 to extend the power lines half a block to her house. Two weeks later it was my fortune to see her melt with delight as the same sun we cowered from when we met now powered up her refrigerator and her cooling fan.

<div>   The story of Maria  inspires me to raise more money this year.  My goal is to double the funding and do twice as much work this year.  As usual, I will not use crisis-mongering language to raise money..  Nor will I ask individuals to give more than they can afford.  Instead, I ask each of you to use your own social network to invite new donors by forwarding this email to your friends and following up with a phone call or email.  Together we can!

<div>Me alegra mucho decir que este año en Vieques alcanzamos un hito: más del equipo que ayudamos a instalar fue adquirido por viequenses que donado por el proyecto solar. Dieciséis personas asistieron a nuestra reunión preliminar; el interés en la energía solar con baterías parece mayor que nunca. Otro gran avance este año: encontramos un proveedor de baterías LiFePo en San Juan, donde el proveedor puede realizar el mantenimiento y la reparación de las baterías, y vende kits que nosotros podemos reparar en campo. Y, otra buena noticia, nos enteramos de que las principales empresas de inversores están abriendo talleres de servicio en San Juan.

Cuando conocí a María, caminaba cuesta arriba desde el pueblo hacia su casa construida en un contenedor de carga, con una bolsa de hielo goteando en una mano y un galón de gasolina para su generador en la otra. Nos saludamos a la sombra de una pequeña Malagueta mientras ella explicaba que LUMA, la empresa privada de la red eléctrica, quería $10,000 para extender el tendido eléctrico media cuadra hasta su casa. Dos semanas después, tuve la fortuna de verla derretirse de alegría cuando el mismo sol que nos encogía encendió su refrigerador y su ventilador.
