Team Amelia!

Amelia is a smart, sassy, creative five-year-old, who can’t wait to start kindy next year. She enjoys learning and is at her happiest playing with all her friends at day care.  Amelia has just started to learn to surf and can’t wait for her first season of Nippers. Most of all Amelia loves to sing and dance and wants to be a rock star or a doctor when she grows up.

Up until a few weeks ago Amelia’s biggest challenge was learning how to master a lunchbox, so she could be ready for school next year. That all changed when Amelia was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital, lights and sirens blaring.

Tests revealed Amelia has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL).

Amelia now has to undergo many gruelling months of painful and invasive treatment, including intensive chemotherapy. She needs a central line in her neck to allow access to her medication. This will remain in place for the duration of her treatment.

After her acute phase of chemotherapy, treatment will continue for a further 18 months, with ongoing medication needed to mop up the leukaemia cells that appear.

While Amelia is bearing the brunt of this painful time, her whole family is being affected. Mum Renee has put her teaching career on hold so she can be by Amelia’s side 24/7. Dad Bobby continues to work and care for Amelia’s big brothers, Louis and Dekan, who are desperately worried about their sister.

With the help of the incredible team at Sydney Children’s Hospital, plus Amelia’s amazing resilience in coping with twice-weekly chemo and its side effects, the outcome is hopeful. Statistics are on Amelia’s side, with 80 per cent of children remaining cancer-free for a minimum of five years post-treatment.

Financial issues will add another layer of stress that the family must cope with among their worry and heartbreak. It’s going to be a long, stressful and expensive road ahead.
