String Instruments for ADLRP

Donation protected
The 2013-2014 school year marks my second year as the Instrumental Music Director at Academia De La Recta Porta in Washington DC. Our school is a small, private Christian School whose students are largely funded by DC's Scholarship Fund, which allows them to qualify for a private school education based on financial need. Serving the underprivileged youth of our community, ADLRP is a vibrant community of dedicated, hard working, intelligent, faithful, and musical students. In its first year, the ADLRP String Orchestras were made up of around 15 students grades 4-12. Some students rented instruments and others played on instruments that the school ordered from Amazon, which I doctored up and made playable. By the end of their first full school year receiving stringed instrument instruction, the students were comfortably performing string orchestra music, solos, and accompanimental parts to choir songs. They had an insatiable drive to perform and would not let one day go by without asking, "when can we have music class today?" The first year was nothing short of inspiring.

As we begin our second year, the interest in playing a stringed instrument has continued to grow. Many students who opted out of string orchestra the first year have now been infected with curiosity and a desire to learn violin, viola, or cello. Of the student body which consists of 66 students grades K-12, 30 students want to play a stringed instrument. That's almost HALF of the students at ADLRP! Their faces were so bright and full of hope as we discussed joining our orchestra. We will also include the entire third grade in our strings program this year!
Unfortunately, there is a discouraging fact that dampens our ambitions and weighs heavily on our spirits. The school and the families are all working with very limited funding, and we currently have a small instrument collection of just four violins. It is just impossible for ADLRP to purchase enough instruments to serve all of our students or for families to rent instruments due to the financial burden. It is my hope that we can raise money using this Go Fund Me site to grow our collection of school instruments by purchasing 6 cellos and 14 violins, as well as to purchase books and music stands. With your help, every student at ADLRP who is interested in learning music will be able to have an instrument in their hands. I have never known a group of students more deserving of this opportunity!
Your donations, however large or small, will help us to move closer to our musical endeavors. The existence of a more inclusive instrumental music program at ADLRP brought so much joy, life, and depth to the students, teachers, and parents of our small school community. Being exposed to these musical experiences in school is a gift that I believe all students should be given, regardless of their economic status and limited financial means. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this message. We hope that you will consider making a contribution, as even the smallest donation brings us closer to the reality of continuing and growing our instrumental music program at Academia De La Recta Porta.

Sincerely,
