Hi friends.
This is a campaign to raise funds to help with my educational goal of obtaining my Master's Degree in Applied Theatre at the Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London.
Applied Theatre is all about combining theatre and social justice, something that I've been engaged in for the last 18 years as a freelance theatre activist. During that time I have created plays and taught social justice theatre workshops with and for the LGBTQ community in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Spokane, San Francisco, North Carolina, and Denver; Women survivors of domestic violence in Santa Fe, Taos; people struggling with addiction in Santa Fe; and young incarcerated women and men in Albuquerque and Montreal.
I am returning to school for a Masters Degree to continue growing my theoretical knowledge base and expanding my practical experience so that I can go on doing this work as a teacher at high schools, universities and more.I chose Central for it's incredible reputation and for the opportunity to understand how our local actions affect and are affected by global movements.
I was accepted into the program late in the game which didn't allow me the opportunity to apply for specific grants and scholarships that would have been tailor made for me as a mature returning student. This past summer, along with finishing my Bachelors degree at Antioch University in Los Angeles, I applied for many awards and scholarships but, much to my surprise, none of them have come through for me as of yet. I came here on faith everyone, and I'm determined to succeed. And so, after a lot of thought I am reaching to you.
I am already in London and I started the program this past week. My classmates are awesome and already the work is intense. Central has given me until the end of the month to come up with at least half of the money I need - which is $15, 000 - in order to stay. Anything you might be able to share with me to help me achieve my goal will go a long way.
I understand fully that times are hard for everyone, but it is in these hard times precisely that we need activists who are willing and have the skills to step into fray and do the hard work of fighting for social justice for all. I am one of those activists.
