Dear Friends and Family (and maybe strangers),
I am now a second year teacher at Horace Mann Elementary in Oakland, California. After my first year of teaching, I have learned a lot and am super excited to start this second year! With your help last year, I was able to make sure that my students had the school supplies they needed, books to read, snacks every day, and so much more. I could not be more grateful for all of your help.
This is a new year with new work to be done! Research suggests that "if students enter kindergarten at a disadvantage, early gaps in understandings of literacy or mathematics tend to be sustained or widened over time; this appears to be particularly true for children of poverty" (McLoyd & Purtell, 2008). The students I teach are without a doubt entering kindergarten at a disadvantage. They come in not knowing their letters, numbers, or even colors. Their peers in more affluent areas already have a listening vocabulary of 17,000 more words (Hart & Risley, 1995). While this is, indeed, disheartening, it also gets me excited. We have a lot of work to do, and I know we can do it.
Because success in literacy early on is a strong predictor of later success in life, that will be my focus this year. My school does have a small guided reading library, but one thing we are lacking in is a lot of copies of common readaloud books that children can read independently after we've read it all together. What I need, then, is about 5 copies of 15-20 common readaloud books. I'm not asking you to buy to buy the whole set because that is probably too much money for one person. Instead, if enough people make enough small donations, we'll be able to buy whole sets. However, if you would like to buy specific sets of books and have them sent to my school, that would be amazing too!
Please donate whatever you can! Every amount, no matter how small, helps. My students have such a curiosity and desire to learn so let's help them! Thank you so much. I, and they, could not be more appreciative.
