SOS Addis is a small registered charity set up in 2004 by five Ethiopian women, one of whom is my mother-in-law, Kiros Habtu Wolde-Giorghis. Their mission: To reduce pollution and improve the health and environment of Addis Ababa, the country's capital city.
The main focus of SOS Addis is collecting and recycling discarded plastic bags and other plastic waste. The charity works with more than 80 women and young unemployed people from disadvantaged communities to do this - tackling the problem head on and at the same time providing income to help lift their families out of poverty.
SOS Addis has to date recycled more than 12 tonnes of plastic waste from the streets and waterways of Addis Ababa. The charity also runs training and education workshops in schools and districts to raise awareness about reducing pollution. It has also pioneered a program introducing low carbon cooking stoves, in favor of dirtier wood-burning models.
If you would like to support my marathon run for SOS Addis you can do so using the DONATE button. If you'd prefer to help using another method of payment, please contact me directly.
Your donation - however small - will help keep SOS Addis working to make Addis Ababa a healthier, safer and happier place to live.
You can read more about SOS Addis at its website:www.sosaddis.org.et
The marathon takes place in Montreal at the end of September 2013. Training hard!
THANK YOU in advance for any help you might choose to give!
