Women & Kids Shelter Play Area Eagle Scout Project

My name is Ryan Darlington and I am 16. I am a Life Scout and am working on my Eagle Scout Project, which will benefit a women's and children's homeless shelter operated by Community Youth and Women's Alliance,  Inc. (also called CYWA)  in Coatesville, PA.  This shelter is for homeless women recovering from drug addition and their children. 

My Eagle Scout Project will create a play area in the backyard of the  homeless shelter.  The shelter is located in a large, old house at 532 East Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, PA. 

The shelter has many women in it who have abused drugs in the past, and are currently trying to improve their lives. These women have many children and are raising them by themselves. These children were born into poverty and live in a crowded shelter.

The back yard borders an alley.  The back yard is overgrown and has several dead trees.  Unfortunately, trespassers use the back yard as a place to dump trash, including mattresses and tires. 

To create the play area, the project will include cleaning out the brush, trash, and taking down the dead and dangerous trees. I will then install a large chain link fence around the perimeter of the backyard to keep trespassers and trash dumpers out of the backyard. Lastly, I will put in a swing set, picnic table and/or other play equipment for the enjoyment of the women and children living in the shelter.  Any left over money will be spent on other improvements to the shelter. 

Some information on the CYWA:
The CYWA is an organization in Coatesville, PA with multiple shelters and programs that work to benefit the community. The Community Youth and Women's Alliance Inc. works to eliminate poverty and provide a safe place for women and their children to live as the organization improves their lives.  The organization also works to improve the mental health of those in the community, help those addicted to drugs get off and stay off drugs and to provide clean, safe  and affordable housing in Coatesville.
