Dinner Updates

Our first dinner was an enormous success and we are gearing up for the next event. Thank you to everyone who supported our first Master's Dinner. This round of donations will fund the five remaining dinners for the 2013-2014 school year and will provide 150 outstanding students with a fine dining experience.

Sharpstown High School
Sharpstown High School is in the middle of a wonderful turn around - one funded by the support of corporations and community members who are determined to bring this school back from the brink of closure. For many years Sharpstown HS was known as a dropout factory, it was even featured on Frontlines: Drop Out Nation. Faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to teach our students that they can graduate, they can go to college, and success can be part of their future. The belief behind it all sounds wonderful: we work longer and harder hours and the students learn more; we close the achievement gap and they apply to college; we provide a nurturing and rigorous learning environment and they are prepared for the challenges ahead. However, many do not know that the world is much larger than their neighborhood. Many of our students lack the confidence to order a meal at a restaurant. They do not know that they have to order a drink separately because their version of eating out is picking a number from a menu posted above the cash register.

The Master's Dinner
On a recent field trip, the students told me their order and expected it to be relayed to the restaurant employees two feet away. It was then that it hit me: how can I expect them to apply to a college and live their lives confidently if they struggle to order their own meal at a non-fast food restaurant?
Thus the idea of The Master's Dinner.

Invictus:"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."
This year, all freshmen are expected to memorize "Invictus," by William Henley. They are challenged to master their fate on a daily basis. The Master's Dinner is the reward for any student who lives up to theme of the poem. Through this opportunity, our students will be exposed to the amazing city we live in, taken out of their comfort zone, and pushed to confidently face different life circumstances. Every six weeks each English teacher will nominate two students to participate in our dinner. We will take them to nice local restaurants where a professional from various fields will be available to answer questions and discuss career opportunities and colleges. It seems so simple to many, it is just a dinner, but to most of our students it will be an amazing experience.

Please support our vision by making a donation to this page. All proceeds will go to paying for the students meals. Your contribution does not include the faculty meals. Transportation will be provided by staff and friends. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you wish to be a key note speaker at one of our dinners, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your time and contribution.
