We, Adonia and Felicia, are taking on the MR340 - the longest non-stop paddle race in the world! On July 8th, at 7 in the morning, we are going to put our kayak into the Missouri River in Kansas City, and we aren't stopping until we reach St. Louis, 340 miles later. Are we crazy, scared? A little. Are we going to do it? You bet!
A little back story: A looong time ago, after moving out of suburbia to the boonies, we took our first family float trip down a river in a beat up old canoe. Adonia was 10, Felicia was 3. We capsized and got hung up a couple of times, but that trip was so fun, memorable, and bonding for our family. It has become a family tradition, and over the years we have upgraded to kayaks, and included many friends and relatives in our scenic floats. Perhaps some of you reading this have your own memories of "the Castor River" :)
Mind you, none of these trips have been longer than 10 or 12 miles at best. And due to Adonia's growing flock of children, it has been 4+ years since her last float. However, after coming across an article about the MR340 last summer, a seed was planted. The idea grew into a dream, and on September 1 we decided to TAKE ACTION on our dream. We shook hands and committed to doing whatever it took to race the Missouri River next summer.
So what is this all about? The MR340 is a race. People float in anything from canoes to crew kayaks. They shove off at 7 in the morning, and have 88 hours to reach the end, or they are disqualified. There are nine checkpoints, and every boat needs a ground crew to support and keep track of them. Basically those are the guidelines, and you do it however you can! Sleep and pee where you can, beat the heat, fight off fatigue, conquer your internal demons, and just paddle like crazy 'til you pull into St. Louis! Last year, there were about 400 participants from around the world in the race. Only 2/3 of the boats finished. The top 10 boats clocked in at around 35 hours. We don't just hope to complete the race, we aim to finish in under 50 hours.

This endeavor will require a lot of training, preparation, and resources. Yesterday, we took to our flooded creek in our first trip together. It is so thrilling to be taking the first steps towards our dream. We would greatly appreciate your generosity in contributing to our adventure. Expenses we need to cover include:
Required safety equipment
Support for our ground crew
You know what? Life is pretty darn exciting when you challenge yourself to do something you wouldn't normally think you could do, when you take action on a dream. We hope this inspires you to do the same.
