Kevin Jenkins - Burn Recovery Fund

On Saturday August 24, 2013, the Jenkins family had a tragic stove-top kitchen fire. In a heroic effort to save his family, Kevin tried to smother the fire with the lid to the pan, but to no avail. In utter panic, he carried the flaming pan outside in the hopes of saving his family's life. His wife Natasha and son Kai were not hurt. Kevin was. Severely.

Kevin is currently under close observation at the Emanuel Burn Center in Portland, where he will be for the next 5 weeks.

His hands, arms, neck and face received the worst burns. The doctors don't think his face will scar, but he will need at least 3 skin graphs on his arms and neck. He has already started physical therapy on his hands and will continue PT to prevent them from turning into claws.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, Kevin will undergo surgery - the first of many - to remove dead skin. Multiple skin graph surgeries will be scheduled as healing allows.

Kevin is the sole provider for his young family. He has been working for Homeforward: The Housing Authority of Portland since they moved from Michigan to Oregon 5 years ago. This leaves this young family without an income or provider. Natasha was finishing up her college degree, but will now take time off from her last term to help care for Kevin.

Currently, Natasha is spending both day and night with Kevin at the hospital in between running their son to daycare, and taking care of home projects; cleaning, shopping, laundry, bill paying, etc. Natasha said she is frightened to cook after the traumatic event; witnessing the horrors of what a fire can do and watching Kevin's blackened skin fall off in the ambulance. Kind neighbors have been helping out with Kai during the night, and their daycare provider has generously offered to have Kai stay for 5 days per week, rather than the typical 3 days.

Kevin has a good health insurance plan, as well as partial disability, but his family will not be able to meet monthly costs with Kevin now out of work. It will take a minimum of three months of intense physical therapy after he is released from the hospital to be able to use his hands properly. One of Natasha's wishes is to receive a used X-box donation so that Kevin can use it to improve his hand coordination physical therapy. (Xbox received - thank you!)

The family is hoping to raise $8500 to help cover its expenses for the next 4 months, as well as the health insurance deductible.
